Capitalize family appellations only when the name of a person follows, when they are unmodified, or when they are used in direct address:
- Grandmother Smith
- Aunt Sarah
- I met Mother at the theatre.
- Tell me, Son, where you have been.
but
- John’s grandmother
- This is my aunt, Sarah Vick.
