Les médicaments psychotropes agissent sur le système nerveux central, en modifiant certains processus biochimiques et physiologiques du cerveau. Les cellules nerveuses (neurones) synthétisent des substances appelées neuromédiateurs (ou neurotransmetteurs), principalement : la dopamine, la sérotonine et la noradrénaline. Ces neuromédiateurs interviennent dans le fonctionnement des neurones. On observe une perturbation de ces neuromédiateurs dans certains troubles, comme les troubles dépressifs, les troubles bipolaires, les troubles anxieux ou les troubles schizophréniques. Les médicaments psychotropes agissent sur ces neuromédiateurs. Ils ont aussi des effets autres que psychiques, ce qui explique d'ailleurs certains de leurs effets indésirables. Ils sont habituellement classés en cinq grands groupes : 1. antidépresseurs, 2. neuroleptiques (dits aussi antipsychotiques), 3. anxiolytiques (tranquillisants), 4. hypnotiques (somnifères), 5. stabilisants de l'humeur (dits aussi régulateurs de l'humeur, thymorégulateurs, ou parfois normothymiques). 2, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9dicament%20psychotrope
