This idea of a computer program giving a "trace" of its own performance is not quite as straightforward as it may seem. On most computer systems there is a way of running any program under a "trace option," which typically gives a list of the procedures entered, in order, and of the values of variables. This trace is supposed to help the programmer understand why his program has run amok, assuming it has.
