C'est en 1923 qu'Osram découvre un métal dont la dureté est seulement dépassée par celle du diamant. Krupp achète le brevet et appelle ce nouveau produit widia (wie diamant = comme le diamant). Le widia, qui présente une grande dureté et une grande résistance à l'usure, est fabriqué en mélangeant de la poudre de tungstène et du noir de fumée. Le carbure de tungstène ainsi obtenu est additionné de cobalt et passé dans un broyeur à boulets. Enfin ce mélange est moulé à haute pression puis cémenté en atmosphère réductrice à 1400-1500 °. Cette opération, qui s'accompagne d'une réduction de volume de l'ordre de 40%, donne le widia. Celui-ci ne se prête ni au forage, ni à la trempe. 3, record 2, French, - widia
