La translation d’un cimetière signifie que le cimetière existant est désaffecté (fermé) et transféré dans un autre lieu plus adapté. La translation est justifiée par le fait que le cimetière ne remplit plus les conditions légales pour être maintenu : il est devenu trop exigu ou bien il est situé dans une zone prohibée. L’ensemble des sépultures est alors transféré dans un nouveau cimetière. Une fois la translation décidée, le cimetière existant est fermé dès que les nouveaux emplacements (dans le nouveau cimetière) sont disposés à recevoir les inhumations.
