Vitrectomy was scheduled after explaining the pros and cons of the procedure to the patient, who then agreed to undergo the procedure. The vitreous body was removed under retrobulbar anesthesia through a standard three-channel 23G [gauge] or 25G high-speed vitreous cutting head and optical fiber via pars plana of the ciliary body. Triamcinolone acetonide was injected into the vitreous cavity, the remaining posterior vitreous cortex was stained and removed. Using 23G or 25G intraocular forceps, the edge of ERM [epiretinal membrane] was clamped, and centripetal peeling was performed along the retina surface to minimize the risk of surgically induced MH [macular hole].

Simpson's Obstetrical Forceps... Developed in 1848 by Dr. James Simpson of Edinburgh, these forceps were a combination of features from earlier models. He retained the finger rests and deep finger depressions in the handle and connected the forceps with a notched joint.

CONT

James Young Simpson(1842) adapted the design of forceps to include a prominent pelvic curve with parallel shanks and an articulating lock. The space created with the divergence of the shanks allows for finger positioning and control of the molded head of the fetus. They have an elongated and flattened cephalic curve, which provides minimal trauma in traction, and are best suited to deliveries witout need of major rotation.

OBS

The credit for the invention of the precursor of the modern forceps to be used on live infants goes to Peter Chamberlen of England(circa 1600). Modifications have led to more than 700 different types and shapes of forceps. In 1745, William Smellie described the accurate application to the occiput, rather than the previously performed pelvic application, regardless of the position of the head. In 1845, Sir James Simpson developed a forceps that was designed to appropriately fit both cephalic curvatures and pelvic curvatures. In 1920, Joseph DeLee further modified that instrument and advocated the prophylactic forceps delivery. In an era in which many women labored and delivered under heavy sedation, forceps deliveries became common.... When forceps deliveries are performed, Simpson forceps... is the instrument most commonly used for outlet-and low-forceps deliveries.

OBS

Elliot forceps are used for the unmolded head while Simpsons forceps are used for the molded head. Specialized forceps include rotational forceps such as Kielland, Barton, and Piper forceps(for the after-coming head of a breech).

OBS

In medical eponyms, the possessive form, such as "Simpson's forceps", often disappears over the years. For that reason, the written forms "Simpson's forceps" and "Simpson's obstetrical forceps" are also found.

DEF

An obstetrical forceps having a sliding lock and little pelvic curve.

OBS

Kielland's forceps [were] originally designed to deliver the fetal head at or above the pelvic brim, lying in the transverse axis of the pelvis and rotating it when it had reached the pelvic cavity. The forceps is used today for rotation and extraction of the head which is arrested in the deep transverse or occipito-posterior position. The blades have very little pelvic curve and are virtually an axis traction forceps. A large episiotomy is needed. The shallowness of the curve allows safe rotation in the vagina. Downward traction encourages rotation of the head. The claw lock allows the blades to slide on each other and correct or encourage synclitism of the fetal head as required. The range of movement allowed by the lock makes it possible to apply lethal compression to the fetal head if the instrument is used improperly

CONT

If the fetus's head needs to be rotated, there is now a tendency to use manual rotation, rotation with a vacuum extractor, or caesarean section in preference to Kielland's rotational forceps. This change in practice arose in the 1980s after high rates of neonatal morbidity and mortality were associated with Kielland's forceps... Kielland's forceps are only used for select cases and by experienced obstetricians.

OBS

In medical eponyms, the possessive form, such as "Kielland's forceps"(Christian Kielland or Kjelland, Norwegian obstetrician) often disappears over the years. For that reason, the written forms "Kjelland forceps" and "Kielland forceps"are also found.

The actual method used in initial crossing of wheat varieties is conditioned by the fact that wheat is bi-sexual and normally self-pollinating. Before the wheat plant has shed its pollen, the anthers are removed with forceps from the flowers of the plant that is to become the female parent, and a cover is slipped over the emasculated wheat head to exclude foreign pollen. Two or three days later, the cover is taken off and ripe anthers are removed from another wheat plant, selected as the male parent, broken over the stigma of each emasculated flower, and the cover replaced. The fertilized egg cells now develop into grains which usually mature a little more than a month later.

A surgical instrument with two blades and two handles that is designed to hold small absorbent pads. It is used for blunt dissection and hemostasis.

OBS

[The sponge-holding forceps] is used for blunt dissection and hemostatis.

OBS

While sponge forceps have proven useful in a variety of new surgical techniques, their primary arena has traditionally been gynecological, surgical female sterilization, and abortion procedures. This is because sponge forceps have the ability to grip and manipulate tissue during examinations and minor surgeries with a minimum of damage and trauma.... Surgeons consider them standard thoracic instruments when performing lung surgeries such as bullectomies. The blunt tips these devices offer prove excellent tools to grasp and collapse the lung and manipulate lung tissue for complete exploration.... Surgeons will also use sponge-holding forceps with tonsil wipes to treat pleural abrasions, and they will often use them in colposcopy operations to hold dry or moist cotton balls. The tong-like tips of sponge forceps make them excellent tools when handling sponges, gauzes, or sensitive medical supplies.

OBS

Sponge forceps can be straight or curved. Sponge forceps can have smooth or serrated jaws. Used to atraumatically hold viscera(bowel and bladder).

OBS

There are many varieties of sponge forceps : Ballenger sponge forceps; Bergmann sponge forceps; Bozeman sponge forceps; Fletcher sponge forceps; Foerster sponge forceps; Foerster sponge holding forceps; Foerster sponge(ring) forceps; Heine sponge holding forceps; Javerts ring forceps; Rampley sponge forceps; Rampley sponge holder; Rampley sponge holding forceps; etc.

A strong forceps used for seizing or removing fragments of bone.

These forceps, called ostagra by the Greeks, were specifically used on bones. Paul of Aegina described one of their uses :"If the bone is strong it is first to be perforated with the drills called abaptista and the fractured bone is to be removed in fragments, with the fingers if possible, if not, with a tooth forceps or bone forceps. "Soranus of Ephesus, who lived in the reign of Trajan(A. D. 97-118) used bone forceps to remove pieces of the skull after impaction of the foetal cranium. Bone forceps may also have been used for extraction of arrow or lance heads from wounds; the grips on the tips of the forceps would make grasping such objects easier.
