  • Insects, Centipedes, Spiders, and Scorpions
Universal entry(ies)
CONT

The Great Ash Sphinx(Sphinx chersis), wingspan 4-5", has several fine, black, lengthwise lines on each ash-gray fore wing. Its caterpillars feed on wild cherry, ash, lilac, and privet, ranging throughout most of the United States and southern Canada.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Insectes, mille-pattes, araignées et scorpions
Entrée(s) universelle(s)
OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Insects, Centipedes, Spiders, and Scorpions
Universal entry(ies)
CONT

Wingspan 90-110 mm. Wings mouse-gray, streaked with black and brown. Hind wings strong, pointed. Fore wings paler with 2 zigzag dark lines crossing middle of wing. Body heavy, torpedo-shaped. Head prominent, eyes and palps large, extended tongue at least as long as body. Abdomen above has 5 pairs of yellow spots... Food : Caterpillars feed on foliage of plants in the nightshade family, such as tomato and tobacco.

OBS

Not to be confused with another member of the same genus (Manduca) the tobacco hornworm moth whose caterpillar also feeds on the foliage of the nightshade family (tobacco and tomato). In southern tobacco-growing states of the U.S.A., the adult of this species, as well as that of the tomato hornworm moth, is often called "tobacco fly". Hence "tobacco fly" as a generic term is imprecise.

DEF

A wing that in planform somewhat resembles a diamond or lozenge, but usually not symmetrical fore and aft.

Domaine(s)
  • Cellule d'aéronefs
CONT

Record 6 2009-06-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Airframe
DEF

A wing that is not linked to the fuselage by means of a mast or bracing wire.

CONT

The most common current wing design is the cantilever. A single large beam, called the main spar, runs through the wing, typically nearer the leading edge at about 25 percent of the total chord. In flight, the wings generate lift, and the wing spars are designed to carry this load through the fuselage to the other wing. To resist fore and aft movement, the wing will usually be fitted with a second smaller drag-spar nearer the trailing edge, tied to the main spar with structural elements or a stressed skin. The wing must also resist twisting forces, done either by a monocoque "D" tube structure forming the leading edge, or by the aforementioned linking two spars in some form of box beam or lattice girder structure.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cellule d'aéronefs
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Airframe
OBS

SLAT-A section of the wing leading edge which is free to move fore and aft on tracks. When the section is at a high angle of attack, the local suction at the wing leading edge creates a chordwise force downward which actuates the slat. The slat falls within the contour of the wing leading edge when closed.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aerodynamics and Theory of Gases
  • Aeroindustry
CONT

Wing sweep, whether fore or aft, postpones and alleviates the effects of shock waves in both transonic and supersonic flight. This is because the airflow component parallel to the local wing sweep(strictly the sweep of the isobars) is unaltered and only the flow across the sweep lines is influenced by section shape. The wing behaves as if it were in slower-moving airstream.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Théorie des gaz et aérodynamique
  • Constructions aéronautiques
CONT
