MATRIX BRECCIAS [4 records]

Record 1 2014-01-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
DEF

The natural fine-grained material between the larger particles of a sedimentary rock.

CONT

Conglomerates... consist of rounded pebbles, cobbles and boulders set in a fine-grained matrix. The matrix usually consists of sand or silt and is commonly cemented by calcite or quartz. In contrast, breccias contain angular rock fragments similarly set in fine-grained, sandy or silty matrix.

CONT

In breccia deposits, the clasts are fragments of the host rocks, and the matrix is rich in the iron oxides.

OBS

matrix: the term is applied to sedimentary rocks; the igneous equivalent is "groundmass," although "matrix" is also commonly used of igneous rocks.

OBS

Plural: matrices.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
DEF

The mechanical wearing, grinding, scraping, or rubbing away (or down) of rock surfaces by friction and impact, in which the solid rock particles transported by wind, ice, waves, running water, or graving are the tools of abrasion.

CONT

Breccias are characterized by angular fragments of altered wallrock in a matrix of quartz and/or tourmaline. Generally, no rotation or mechanical abrasion of the fragments has been observed.

OBS

Compare with "corrasion."

DEF

Action d'usure, d'une surface solide, produite par le frottement des particules solides entrant en contact avec cette surface.

OBS

Le mot s'applique surtout à l'action de la mer au niveau de l'estran et à certaines profondeurs.
