Matrix effects can be divided into two kinds, physical and chemical. Physical matrix effects depend on the physical properties of the sample and generally relate to the ablation step of LIBS [laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy]. That is, differences between the specific heat, latent heat of vaporization, thermal conductivity, absorption, etc., of different matrices can change the amount of an element ablated from one matrix compared with another matrix even though the properties of the ablation laser pulse remain constant. 2, record 1, English, - physical%20matrix%20effect

Chemical matrix effects occur when the presence of one element affects the emission characteristics of another element. This can complicate calibration of the technique and hence the ability to obtain quantitative results. These effects can be compensated for in the analysis if the concentration and effect of the interfering element(s) are known.... An example of a chemical matrix effect is the reduction in emission intensity of an ionized species... upon a significant increase in the concentration of an easily ionizable species in the matrix. 2, record 2, English, - chemical%20matrix%20effect

This paper presents a simple and effective method for matching two uncalibrated images. Corner points are firstly extracted as interest points in the two images. Each interest point is assigned one dominant orientation. The initial set of point matches is then obtained by singular value decomposition of a correspondence strength matrix. A new expression of this matrix is introduced to handle more complicated imaging conditions. Each element of this matrix is the similarity measure between two interest points. The new similarity measure is invariant to image rotation by taking into account the dominant orientation of the two interest points. The epipolar geometry constraint is finally imposed to reject the false matches. Experimental results on real images show this approach to be effective for general image matching. 4, record 11, English, - singular%20value%20decomposition

Three families of repetitive sequences have been studied in most detail, including the 35-40 bp [base pair] repetitive extragenic palindromic(REP) sequence, the 124-127 bp enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus(ERIC) sequence, and the 154 bp BOX element. These sequences appear to be located in distinct, intergenic positions all around the chromosome. The repetitive elements may be present in both orientations on the chromosome, and PCR [polymerase chain reaction] primers have been designed to "read outward" from the inverted repeats in REP and ERIC, and from the boxA subunit of BOX. The use of the above primer(s) and PCR leads to the selective amplification of distinct genomic regions located between REP, ERIC or BOX sequences. The corresponding protocols are referred to as REP-PCR, ERIC-PCR and BOX-PCR, respectively, and rep-PCR collectively. Amplified bands are size fractionated through a gel matrix to yield fingerprint patterns resembling "bar codes", analogous to UPC codes used in grocery stores, and function as a signature for specific bacterial strains. 3, record 12, English, - BOX%2DPCR

In facsimile, the diode sensor array uses a stationary configuration of tiny photodiodes arranged in a matrix that equals in width one lateral scan line of a document. An original is rollerfed from a flatbed tray and passes by the sensor array one line at a time. Light is reflected from each line and focused through a lens onto the face of the photodiode array. Each diode acts as an independent photosensor in converting a small picture element into part of the total electrical signal for a scan line. 1, record 15, English, - photodiode%20sensor%20array%20scanner

The ratio of the applied excitation force phasor to the resulting velocity phasor with all other connection points of the system free, i. e. having zero restraining forces. Free impedance is the arithmetic reciprocal of a single element of the mobility matrix. 1, record 17, English, - free%20impedance

Historically, often no distinction has been made between blocked impedance and free impedance. Caution should, therefore, be exercised in interpreting published data. While experimentally determined free impedances could be assembled into a matrix, this matrix would be quite different from the blocked impedance matrix, resulting from mathematical modelling of the structure and, therefore, would not conform to the requirements for using mechanical impedance in a overall theoretical analysis of the system. 1, record 17, English, - free%20impedance

1, record 17, French, - imp%C3%A9dance%20libre

... the contributions to the depositions or ambient concentrations at a series of receptor areas of interest from a series of specified source regions can be displayed conveniently in matrix form. This format of presentation is called a "transfer matrix" because each element of the matrix expresses, quantitatively, the physical relationship between a specified receptor area and a specified source area for the species and variable of interest. One can thus relate source to receptor, or "transfer" the effect of a change at source to the receptor. 1, record 18, English, - transfer%20matrix

Matrix interference or bulk interference is caused by either a change in viscosity of the solution or by a large excess of extraneous ions... the absorption of a given concentration of an element in organic solvents can be as much as four to five times higher than the aqueous solution of the same concentration aspirated into the flame. 1, record 19, French, - interaction%20due%20%C3%A0%20la%20matrice
