MATRIX FLOW [19 records]

Record 1 2024-10-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
DEF

Material put in place to fill in voids between containers and thus to curtail the transport of radionuclides from a waste storage facility.

CONT

Sand could be used as the backfill material between layers of waste packages. It has several functions : to reduce radiation fields, to reduce the risk of fire, to stabilize the waste packages and to provide a permeable matrix through which any infiltrating water may flow out of the repository.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
CONT

La stabilité à long terme de différents matériaux de remplissage, notamment des argiles gonflantes, susceptibles de jouer un rôle de barrière, est également à l'étude : effets de la température, de la salinité de l'eau et des ions en solutions, etc.

Subject field(s)
  • Wastewater Treatment
CONT

A sludge granule is an aggregate of microorganisms forming during wastewater treatment in an environment with a constant upflow hydraulic regime. In the absence of any support matrix, the flow conditions create a selective environment in which only those microorganisms, capable of attaching to each other, survive and proliferate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des eaux usées
CONT

... horizontal drilling is usually undertaken to achieve important technical objectives related to specific characteristics of a target reservoir [such as] the reservoir rock's permeability, which is its capacity to conduct fluid flow through the interconnections of its pore spaces(termed its "matrix permeability"), or through fractures(its "fracture permeability"), and/or the expected propensity of the reservoir to develop water or gas influxes deleterious to production, either from other parts of the reservoir or from adjacent rocks, as production takes place(an event called "coning").

DEF

OBS

La fracturation est un procédé utilisé dans l'extraction du pétrole pour augmenter, en y pratiquant des fractures, la perméabilité de la couche productrice.

Subject field(s)
  • Engineering Tests and Reliability
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

In the rigid-airfoil study, the airfoil is set to either torsional or flapping motion at different oscillatory frequencies. Different freestream Mach numbers and preset angles of attack are also included in the test matrix. Moreover, the test matrix also accounts for different positions of the wake flow survey rake, traversable in the airfoil downstream. A combination of these parameters must be used to locate a specific experimental data set.

OBS

The prediction of these operating limits has been an area of active research at the NRC [National Research Council] Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC Aerospace) for the past decade. In addition to standard airwake flow survey capabilities, NRC Aerospace researchers have developed an unparalleled high-fidelity wind tunnel simulation of the helicopter/ship dynamic interface. The combination of a scaled powered rotor and a fuselage model mounted around a stiff, lightweight balance has led to a unique capability.

OBS

A pressure rake probe was used to confirm the inlet endwall boundary layer thicknesses. Five-hole probe wake surveys were performed to determine loss coefficients and axial velocity ratios.

OBS

rake (peigne de mesure): A device consisting essentially of a row of pressure-measuring tubes or temperature-sensitive elements arranged like a rake or comb, used to sense the pressure or temperature at desired intervals in a fluid flow.

Subject field(s)
  • Microbial Ecology
DEF

A small, immobilized bed, microbe bioreactor.

CONT

The bioreactor "plug" is made of slotted PVC pipe which is screw cap sealed at each end. Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms. The seed cultures in the bioplugs are a mixture of microorganisms selected for their abilities to biodegrade the contaminants of concern... The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed.

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Geology
DEF

Permeability that varies with direction of flow through the porous medium.

OBS

Lateral permeability contrast can be particularly important in fractured formations, where effective permeability in the direction of the fractures may be many times greater than the matrix permeability. If the permeability in one direction is significantly more than in the other, the flow pattern may more closely approximate linear flow than radial flow. This can be detected from well-test data. Likewise, laminations in most clastic formations cause the permeability normal to the bedding plane to be less than the lateral permeability parallel to bedding. This is called vertical to horizontal permeability anisotropy.

CONT

CMC Blisk Material Development and Testing. Engineers at MSFC are developing fabrication processes and designs for ceramic matrix composite(CMC) components through material and component testing, structural modeling, microscopy, and nondestructive analysis techniques. CMCs will be utilized extensively on future generation launch vehicles for propulsion systems and for vehicle hot structure. They are necessary to enable lightweight components capable of operating over a wide temperature range. These advantages translate into increased safety and lower cost compared to state-of-the-art materials. MSFC is primarily responsible for developing CMCs and transitioning them into propulsion applications such as cooled and radiation cooled flow paths, thrust chambers, integrally bladed disks(blisks) and nozzles. Hot structures for leading edge and control surface applications are also supported.
