In the most common type of high temperature reactor (HTR) fuel, tiny particles of nuclear fuel are coated with three or four layers of coatings which are impenetrable to fission products up to a temperature of 2000 celsius. About 20,000 particles, bonded with graphite are massed together to form a spherical fuel element with a diameter of about 6 centimeters. The high temperature reactor ... might contain 100,000 or more of these fuel elements. 5, record 4, English, - fuel%20pebble

The pebbles are... designed to passively limit the amount of heat unleashed by the nuclear fission reactions that drive the reactor. The fissionable material is divided into groups of 100 million billion uranium-235 atoms scattered within a 0. 5 mm sphere of uranium dioxide. That core is coated with four containment layers.... Some 15, 000 carbon-coated uranium dioxide kernels, looking like nuclear poppy seeds, are embedded in a tennis ball-size graphite and resin matrix. Graphite acts to slow the fission neutrons and so acts as an embedded moderator. The matrix is then encased in a 5 mm pure carbon shell, sintered, annealed, and machined to a uniform diameter of 6 cm. 2, record 4, English, - fuel%20pebble

Foams are relatively new forms of polymer-based materials. They are light in weight and versatile, and are employed increasingly in a variety of applications that include thermal and acoustic insulation, core materials for sandwich panels, fabrication of furniture and flotation materials.... A plastic foam material consists of a gas phase dispersed in a solid plastic phase and derives its properties from both. The solid plastic component forms the matrix. The gas phase is contained in voids or cells.... The term cellular plastic, a synonym for plastic foam, is derived from the structure of the material. Foams are classified as open-cell or closed-cell. In closed-cell foams each cell(more or less spherical in shape) is completely enclosed by a thin wall or membrane of plastic, whereas in open-cell foams the individual cells are interconnected. 4, record 12, English, - cellular%20plastic

4, record 12, French, - plastique%20alv%C3%A9olaire

Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself(also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. The damage effects in microdispersed fuels will approach those in a solid solution, while the radiation effects in macrodispersed fuels will mainly occur in the inclusions themselves and in a thin matrix layer around the inclusion, predominantly due to neutron damage. 1, record 21, English, - microdispersed%20fuel

An immobilized enzyme system is the material which results from immobilization of an enzyme onto a support matrix. Magnetic support matrices and immobilized enzyme systems offer several advantages when compared to nonmagnetic systems. For example, separation of such materials from other nonmagnetic solids by use of a magnetic field can permit separations otherwise difficult or impossible to perform. Such a situation is represented by the case where two enzymes, with different deactivation times, are used concurrently on a substrate, with one immobilized enzyme system magnetic and the other nonmagnetic. In this case, after one enzyme is exhausted, the other may be readily recovered and reused by magnetic separation of the two immobilized enzyme systems, which will be recognized as offering great benefits in economy. 1, record 29, English, - magnetic%20support

However, it is not suitable for industrial purposes owing to its high price and lack of stability due to the continuous leaching of silica from the particles during prolonged usage in continuous flow systems, especially in alkaline media. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed. 1, record 32, English, - bioplug

In liquids and solids(as well as molecular gases), the radiation is emitted in bands due to transitions between closely spaced levels. Except in a few special cases, the radiation is emitted by isolated levels associated with activators, usually present in very small concentrations in a matrix or host material. These luminescence centers can be the activator ion itself, or a disturbance of the lattice caused by the activator ion. They correspond to the chromophores of chemists. In the "pure" luminescent materials, such as platinocyanates and uranyl compounds, the centers are ions with unfilled inner electron shells. 1, record 33, English, - luminescence%20center

CMC Blisk Material Development and Testing. Engineers at MSFC are developing fabrication processes and designs for ceramic matrix composite(CMC) components through material and component testing, structural modeling, microscopy, and nondestructive analysis techniques. CMCs will be utilized extensively on future generation launch vehicles for propulsion systems and for vehicle hot structure. They are necessary to enable lightweight components capable of operating over a wide temperature range. These advantages translate into increased safety and lower cost compared to state-of-the-art materials. MSFC is primarily responsible for developing CMCs and transitioning them into propulsion applications such as cooled and radiation cooled flow paths, thrust chambers, integrally bladed disks(blisks) and nozzles. Developed specifically for use in the microgravity environment, the Space DRUMSÖ(Dynamically Responding Ultrasonic Matrix System) facility uses an acoustic levitation process that enables large fluid or solid material samples to be positioned and held stably in microgravity while they are being processed on the space station. Called containerless processing, this leading-edge system of dynamic acoustic beam positioning prevents the samples from touching the walls of their containers, thus avoiding defects or contamination. 2, record 46, English, - acoustic%20levitation

The exposure matrix was developed to account for job, plant, and era dependent differences in TCDD [2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin] exposure. The TCDD exposure estimates are based on(1) the concentration of TCDD in micrograms per gram present in process materials;(2) the duration of exposure to TCDD contamination, expressed as a fraction of a work day; and(3) a qualitative contact factor(0. 05-1. 5) to account for the extent of worker contact with the TCDD contaminated material. These three factors are multiplied together to yield a daily TCDD exposure score. The sum of the daily exposure scores constituted an individual' s cumulative exposure score. Daily TCDD exposure scores range from 0. 001 to 1250. Cumulative TCDD exposure scores are distributed from 0. 002 to 1, 651, 611 exposure score days. The TCDD cumulative exposure score, which incorporates both duration and level of exposure, provides a means for ranking workers for evaluating the relationship between TCDD exposure and mortality in a retrospective cohort study analysis. 2, record 47, English, - exposure%20score

1, record 73, French, - matrice%20r%C3%A9ticul%C3%A9e
