MATRIX MULTIPLICATION [8 records]

Record 1 2023-09-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Computer Mathematics
CONT

Multiplication of a sparse matrix with a dense matrix is a building block of an increasing number of applications in many areas such as machine learning and graph algorithms.

OBS

dense matrix: The plural form is "dense matrices" or "dense matrixes."

Key term(s)
  • dense matrices
  • dense matrixes

CONT

Key term(s)
  • matrices densas

DEF

A square matrix converted into another by a combination of any of the following operations : interchange of two rows or two columns; multiplication of a row or columns by a nonzero scalar, addition to the elements of one row(or column) of multiples of the corresponding elements of another row(or column).

DEF

DEF

A matrix all of whose entries are zero.

CONT

A null matrix is a matrix in which every element of the matrix equals 0. It can be of any dimension. Addition and subtraction of a null matrix leaves the original matrix unchanged, multiplication with a null matrix results in another null matrix.

OBS

A zero matrix is sometimes called a trivial matrix. A matrix which has at least one nonzero entry is called a nontrivial matrix or nonzero matrix. (It is not required that all entries be nonzero, just that at least one of them is nonzero!)

CONT

There are tow types of matrix multiplication : scalar-by-matrix multiplication and matrix-by-matrix multiplication. As a noun, a scalar is a single number or scale factor that all the matrix elements are multiplied by in scalar multiplication. This is used to scale down all the elements of a matrix in equal proportion. In graphics, this is used on row and column vectors that represent points in space. It moves a point radially toward or away from the origin(0, 0, 0). This is often done to put the values of x, y, and z within a range that graphics routines can more easily handle, especially when integer arithmetic is being performed.

CONT

Scaling, projection, and rotations require many multiplications, and external hardware that speeds up multiplication improves processing rate. The arithmetic processor helps in this regard, but time is also wasted by formatting data and sending it to the arithmetic processor chip. Matrix multipliers... eliminate this overhead by taking large blocks of memory containing many operands, performing arithmetic operations on them, and placing them back into memory using DMA.

CONT

matrix-by-matrix multiplication is a sum-of-the-products operation. The result is a matrix. The multiplier, multiplicand, and product matrixes may all be of different dimensions, but their dimensions must match(in a certain way). This matching corresponds to the way the sums of products are generated from the two matries...
