CMC Blisk Material Development and Testing. Engineers at MSFC are developing fabrication processes and designs for ceramic matrix composite(CMC) components through material and component testing, structural modeling, microscopy, and nondestructive analysis techniques. CMCs will be utilized extensively on future generation launch vehicles for propulsion systems and for vehicle hot structure. They are necessary to enable lightweight components capable of operating over a wide temperature range. These advantages translate into increased safety and lower cost compared to state-of-the-art materials. MSFC is primarily responsible for developing CMCs and transitioning them into propulsion applications such as cooled and radiation cooled flow paths, thrust chambers, integrally bladed disks(blisks) and nozzles. Hot structures for leading edge and control surface applications are also supported. 2, record 2, English, - hot%20structure

Tissue matrix development. In an advance that may pave the way for development of human tissue replacement biodegradable polymer has been synthesized that could function as a matrix to support mammalian(including human) cells. University researchers recently synthesized the copolymer of lactic acid and lysine and chemically attached a biologically active peptide to it. The Federal Government supported the research. Progress in tissue engineering hinges on the development of matrix materials that are biodegradable and compatible with cell function and have adequate adhesive properties. 1, record 3, English, - tissue%20matrix

1, record 3, French, - matrice

Supported catalysts are composed of an active catalytic species dispersed throughout the support matrix. The supports take on many different sizes and shapes, all of which are determined by the reactor engineering. Spheres, extrudates, and tablets are the most popular shapes; however, rings stars, doughnuts, and others, are also used for specialized applications. 2, record 5, English, - supported%20catalyst

All of the properties important for supported powdered catalysts such as particle size, resistance to attrition, pore size, and surface area are likewise important for unsupported catalysts. Since no additional catalytic species are added, it is difficult to control active site location; however, intuitively it is advantageous to maximize the area of active sites within the matrix. This parameter can be influenced by preparative procedures. 1, record 6, English, - unsupported%20catalyst
