METAPLASIA [7 records]

Record 1 2023-06-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Morphology and General Physiology
  • Histology
DEF

The transformation of an epithelium, usually mucosal or glandular, to a stratified squamous epithelium.

CONT

When an air passage is irritated(like from smoking or infection), the cells lining it can change from being like rectangles standing up next to each other, to being flatter and stacked on top of each other. This change is called squamous metaplasia because the cells now look like the type of cells called squamous cells. When the irritation disappears, for example when you stop smoking or the infection clears, the lining cells return to their normal appearance. Squamous metaplasia is not considered a pre-cancer, but if the irritation persists it can progress to squamous dysplasia.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radiography (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
DEF

A reactive lesion occurring in soft tissues, at times near bone and periosteum, most often after trauma. The lesion is characterized by fibrous, osseous, and cartilaginous proliferation and metaplasia.

OBS

The term is a misnomer because often skeletal muscle is not involved and when involved it does not necessarily show inflammatory changes. In its early evolution, bone may not be identifiable on conventional radiography, but computed tomography and ultrasonography may show early signs of calcification in soft tissues.

Domaine(s)

  • Appareil locomoteur (Médecine)
DEF

CONT

The myeloproliferative disorders comprise a group of usually neoplastic diseases, which may be related histogenetically by a common multipotential stem cell, that includes among others acute and chronic granulocytic leukemias, acute and chronic myelomonocytic leukemias, polycythemia vera, myelofibrosis, myeloid metaplasia, essential thrombocytemia, and erythroleukemia. An interrelationship with the lymphoproliferative disorders is thought to exist.

CONT

Increased intraplatelet levels of platelet-derived growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta in patients with myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia.

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie

CONT
