Les noms des unités sont grammaticalement des noms communs : leur première lettre n'est pas une majuscule et ils suivent les règles du pluriel; en revanche, leurs symboles sont invariables et utilisent souvent des majuscules. Dans le SI, comme dans le système métrique, on peut adjoindre au nom d'une unité un préfixe convenable pour former le nom d'un multiple ou d'un sous-multiple décimal de l'unité; le symbole correspondant s'obtient en adjoignant le symbole du préfixe au symbole de l'unité.
