The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 1, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

Usages do not agree on the meaning of the adjectives "Greater" and "Metropolitan" sometimes considered synonyms. Usually, "Greater" means a large city with its surrounding suburbs, while "Metropolitan, "usually said of a metropolis and its suburbs, includes also the inhabited region surrounding the former. The expression "Greater Montréal" was understood as grouping all the municipalities of the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island) forming the new city of Montréal since 1 January 2002, but as excluding those on Jésus Island, Bizard Island and the South Shore. To include all of these, the expressions "Metropolitan Montréal" or "Greater Montréal area" were used. Nevertheless, as usages may differ, it was always necessary to refer to the context to understand what was meant. 1, record 10, English, - Greater%20Montr%C3%A9al

But, since the fusion of all the cities on Montréal Island to form the new city, the expression "Greater Montréal" can take a new meaning and comprise all the insular cities and municipalities of the region, and the expression "Metropolitan Montréal," mean the former and all the cities and municipalities of the region on the North Shore of the Rivière des Mille Îles and the corresponding ones on the South Shore of the St. Lawrence Seaway. 1, record 10, English, - Greater%20Montr%C3%A9al

In Canada (with seven exceptions as of December 31, 2004), the name of an inhabited place has the same form in English and French. The name of the city always takes an accent when used alone or as part of a designation, "Montréal" being the only form registered on the Incorporation Act. Thus, "Greater Montréal" should be written with an accent, and "Montréal Urban Community (MUC)," the original 1970 name of what became the "Communauté urbaine de Montréal (CUM)" in 1983, should have been the initial spelling of the administrative body. 1, record 10, English, - Greater%20Montr%C3%A9al

To include all of these, the expression "Metropolitan Montréal" or "Greater Montréal area" was used. 1, record 11, English, - Metropolitan%20Montr%C3%A9al

Thus, "Greater Montréal" should be written with an accent, and "Montréal Urban Community (MUC)," the original 1970 name of what became the "Communauté urbaine de Montréal (CUM)" in 1983, should have been the initial spelling of the administrative body. 1, record 11, English, - Metropolitan%20Montr%C3%A9al

We present a new Monte Carlo lattice model to study the folding of two-dimensional heteropolymer chains. Previous lattice model studies of two-dimensional chains have been performed on square grids using predefined "move sets" of allowed moves. The motion of the polymer chain in these models is thus highly constrained. To add greater flexibility, we use a triangular lattice and allow the chain to choose its own moves. Physically unrealistic moves are prevented by including kinetic energy effects in the Metropolis algorithm. From the results, we can characterize all of the possible one-and two-monomer moves and sort them according to relative importance. Greater flexibility in the lattice model produces several significant and interesting physical consequences. 1, record 12, English, - Monte%20Carlo%20lattice%20model

Nevertheless, as usages may differ, it was always necessary to refer to the context to understand what was meant. 1, record 17, English, - Metropolitan%20Qu%C3%A9bec

The "Québec Urban Community" (QUC) created on 1 January 1970 by an Act of 1969 of the Assemblée législative du Québec and whose name was changed to "Communauté urbaine de Québec" (CUQ) in 1983, ceased to exist on 1 January 2002 with the creation of the new city of Québec; so did the "Greater Québec." But, since the amalgamation of the municipality and the 12 cities of the Communauté urbaine de Québec to form the new city of Québec, the expression "Greater Québec" can take a new meaning and comprise all the cities and municipalities surrounding the new city, and the expression "Metropolitan Québec," mean the former and all the corresponding cities and municipalities on the South Shore of the St. Lawrence River. 1, record 17, English, - Metropolitan%20Qu%C3%A9bec

In Canada (with seven exceptions as of December 31, 2004), the name of an inhabited place has the same form in English and French. The name of the city always takes an accent when used alone or as part of a designation, "Québec" being the only form registered on the Incorporation Act. Thus, "Greater Québec" should be written with an accent, and "Québec Urban Community (QUC)," the original 1970 name of what became the "Communauté urbaine de Québec (CUQ)" in 1983, should have been the initial spelling of the administrative body. 1, record 17, English, - Metropolitan%20Qu%C3%A9bec

1, record 17, French, - Qu%C3%A9bec%20m%C3%A9tropolitain

Town-Country Symbiosis in Calcutta. Historically, the city's eastward expansion halted west of a marginal zone of low lying marshlands, variously known as Dhapa, East Calcutta, or the area of the salt water lakes. Here a symbiotic, creative relationship exists between town and country. With the participation of the rural inhabitants, much of the solid trash, liquid sewage, and polluted air generated by the metropolis of over ten million inhabitants is recycled into organic nutrients, fresh water, and clean air. The system reduces urban waste, creates a daily supply of fresh fish and green vegetables for Calcutta's kitchens, and generates employment and revenue for East Calcutta's thirty-odd villages. 1, record 19, English, - town%2Dcountry%20symbiosis

In parallel, Scandinavian planners had been adopting versions of what in Copenhagen was called the finger plan: they put new settlement like beads on a string along public transport routes, in the case of Copenhagen a light rail system, in Stockholm a new underground railway. The most celebrated case was Stockholm, where the famous 1952 General Plan of Sven Markelius and Göran Sidenbladh developed systematic pyramids of density around the stations, and also provided service and other jobs in district centres around these same stations, with the idea that as many as one third would find jobs in the places where they lived (Hall 1992a; Hall 1997). 2, record 22, English, - finger%20pal
