The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

The Federal Office of Regional Development(Quebec)(FORD-Q), the Biotechnology Research Institute(BRI) of the National Research Council(NRC), and the City of Montreal are today announcing a major investment, the first step toward the creation in Montreal of a research, development and demonstration centre, the first of its kind in Canada for the environmental technologies sector involved with industrial site remediation. This sector represents a market that is growing rapidly worldwide. The Montreal Centre of Excellence for Environmental Site Remediation fits perfectly into the concept of "technological platforms, "the approach favoured by Environment Canada to stimulate Metropolitan Montreal' s economy. Technological platforms make it possible to test environmental technologies and promote them to potential clients. This concept also contributes to furthering the economic growth of the environmental industry in the context of sustainable development. The Centre's mission will be to contribute to the development of effective and economical expertise in the area of restoring contaminated urban sites, which are a serious obstacle to economic development for cities in general and for Metropolitan Montreal in particular. It will also encourage the transfer of proven technologies to the private sector and the development of collaborative research projects and strategic alliances. 1, record 11, English, - Montreal%20Centre%20of%20Excellence%20for%20Environmental%20Site%20Remediation

1, record 11, French, - Centre%20d%27excellence%20en%20r%C3%A9habilitation%20de%20sites%20de%20Montr%C3%A9al

The hierarchy of business centres appears to have... four levels beneath that of metropolitan business centre : 1) the isolated convenience stores and street-corner developments, 2) neighbourhood centres 3) community centres and 4) regional shopping centres...(L.
