Compton backscattering is a well-established method to produce high-energy photons(gamma rays) for nuclear physics experiments. Compton backscattering involves the collision of a low-energy(eV [electronvolt]) photon with a high-energy(hundreds of MeV [megaelectron volt]) electron. It is shown that the photons scattered in the direction opposite to the direction of the initial photon(backscattered) will have the energy desired for photon beam therapy. 1, record 8, English, - Compton%20backscattering

The COS-B satellite will carry a single large experiment, capable of detecting gamma-rays with energies in excess of 20 MeV in order to study in detail the sources of extraterrestrial gamma radiation. The principal objectives of the study will be to investigate the angular structure of gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane, to measure the flux of the isotropic radiation from high galactic latitudes believed to be of extra-galactic origin, to examine known or postulated point sources of the radiation and to determine the energy spectra of all identified sources. 3, record 13, English, - extraterrestrial%20gamma%20radiation

Photon excitation : X-ray emission induced by the impact of charged particles other than electrons, for example alpha particles, was discovered by Chadwick in 1912. High energy(1. 5 MeV) photons are associated with large cross-sections for ionization and very low backgrounds, two ideal conditions for very low detection limits that effectively reach 10[ upperscript-11]-10[ upperscript-12](g) for elements with Z > 15. On account of this high absolute sensitivity, photon excitation is used with Si(Li) detectors in many applications dealing with the simultaneous determination of trace elements in water, serum, blood and tissues. 1, record 15, English, - photon%20excitation

2, record 28, French, - anneau%20L%2EE%2EA%2ER%2E

Nuclear physics can be divided into two classifications, low-energy and high-energy.... In high-energy nuclear physics... particle energies of hundreds of Mev or even several billion electron volts(Bev) are used to produce all of the leptons, mesons, and baryons. The interactions of these elementary particles are then studied. Cosmic rays fall into the high-energy classification, because the primary cosmic rays are largely protons with energies of many Bev. 1, record 37, English, - high%2Denergy%20nuclear%20physics

A well log of the wall-contact log type that measures radioactivity induced by neutron-neutron reactions. Fast neutrons of several MeV energy, emitted by a source in the sonde, may be slowed and backscattered as epithermal neutrons(0. 4 to 100 ev) by collisions with hydrogen nuclei. Epithermal-neutron abundance is interpreted by assuming a constant lithology, usually limestone, that produces a continuous curve in porosity units. The epithermal-neutron log is largely insensitive to the differences in chlorinity of formation water that may hamper the interpretation of the thermal-neutron log and neutron-gamma log. 2, record 41, English, - epithermal%2Dneutron%20log
