MEXICO ISLAND [4 records]

Record 1 2013-11-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Mass of air which has been over regions close to the equator for several days and which, therefore, has become fairly warm.

CONT

Air masses are classified as equatorial if they develop near the equator, tropical if they originate in the low latitudes, and polar if they originate in the high latitudes. Equatorial air masses are warm and very moist, tropical air masses are warm, and polar air masses are ... well, cold.

CONT

Equatorial(E) air masses, [hot and extremely humid], rarely visit the contiguous United States and almost never reach Canada, but these air masses are important weather factors for the southern nations of North America : southern Mexico, Central America and many of the Atlantic island nations.

Key term(s)
  • equatorial airmass
  • equatorial air-mass
  • E airmass
  • E air-mass

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Masse d'air qui a été sur des régions proches de l'équateur pendant plusieurs jours et qui, par suite, est devenue relativement chaude.

CONT

Les masses d'air sont classifiées selon deux caractéristiques; la température : - très chaude : masse d'air équatoriale (E), - chaude : masse d'air tropicale (T), - froide : masse d'air polaire (P), - très froide : masse d'air arctique (A), l'humidité : - sec : masse d'air continentale (c), - humide : masse d'air maritime (m).

Campo(s) temático(s)
  • Física de la atmósfera
DEF

Masa de aire que ha permanecido durante varios días en regiones próximas al Ecuador y que, por lo tanto, está relativamente caliente.

Record 2 1999-12-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Air Pollution
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
CONT

In this method the cyclone is assumed to consist of an environment, an yewall and an eye. The calculation of the maximum potential intensity requires a vertical sounding of temperature, the surface pressure and the surface air temperature. The soundings used in this study were taken at Isla Socorro, Mexico(latitude 18. 72 N, longitude 110, 95 W, WMO 76723) during the period from 1994-97. This location was chosen because the small size of the island should cause only a minor effect on the sounding and the data should provide a good sample of the thermodynamic state of the atmosphere over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.

OBS

vertical sounding: term standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
DEF

OBS

sondage vertical : terme normalisé par l'ISO.
