Mars Global Surveyor(MGS) launched from Cape Canaveral Air Station, MGS completed the mapping phase of the mission, which lasted one martian year(two Earth years). During this phase, the MGS instruments systematically monitored and made measurements of the planet's surface and atmosphere. La sonde Mars Global Surveyor [MGS] a été fabriquée par Lockheed Martin Astronautics. Elle apparaît comme une boîte rectangulaire flanquée de deux panneaux solaires. La majeure partie de la masse de la sonde se retrouve dans le module cubique qui occupe son centre. En fait, ce module est composé de deux modules plus petits, posés l'un sur l'autre. Le premier des deux modules, le module de propulsion, contient le moteur principal et les réservoirs de carburant. [...] La sonde comporte aussi des petits moteurs d'appoints attachés à chaque coin du module de propulsion. Chacun de ces petits moteurs peut [fournir] une puissance de 4,55 newtons. Ils sont utilisés pour les petites corrections de trajectoire et pour éviter le dandinement de la sonde lorsque le moteur principal fonctionne. 75 % des 385 kg d'ergol sera consommé pendant la phase d'insertion en orbite martienne (MOI). L'autre module contient l'équipement de la sonde, c'est-à-dire les composants électroniques (à l'intérieur) et les instruments scientifiques (à l'extérieur, sur le côté opposé au module de propulsion).
