Within Internet message handling services(MHS), a message transfer agent or mail transfer agent(MTA)... is software that transfers electronic mail messages from one computer to another using a client–server application architecture. An MTA implements both the client(sending) and server(receiving) portions of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

An international standard does not yet exist for the interface between these entities and the DUA; thus, the interface is left to either vendor or user definition. When the UA accesses the Directory Service, the Directory name-to-address resolution is performed before message submission.
