SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 22, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 22, French, - SIAM

Record number: 59, Textual support number: 2 CONT
[A] significant adsorptive characteristic is possessed not alone by carbons, charcoal and chars, but also by such materials as zeolite, silica, alumina, mica and some other. All these differ widely in the number and kinds of substances they adsorb, as well as in the amount of sorbed substances they will retain. In general, the silicaneous, metallic oxides and active earth types of adsorbents are electrically polar-that is, their molecular structure contains an unsymmetrical electron distribution. Since polar substances have strong attraction for one another and since water is highly polar, the polar adsorbents mentioned above retain water in preference to most other fluids and are, therefore, incapable of adsorbing non-aqueous gases efficiently from a humid atmosphere. For use in air conservation, however, which requires a sorbent to extract very small quantities of a very numerous variety of gases and vapors from either dry or humid air during a very brief interval of contact, non-polar adsorbents such as specially processed carbon of high activity, dense structure and extreme relative hardness have been found to be adequate. Activated carbon, being non-polar and hence electronically symmetrical in structure, has no particular affinity for moisture and preferentially adsorbs organic gases and vapors. 4, record 59, English, - nonpolar%20adsorbent
