MICROBIAL PROCESS [12 records]

Record 1 2025-02-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant and Crop Production
  • Collaboration with the FAO
CONT

The germination process in sprout production involves keeping seeds warm and moist for four to seven days. In these conditions, low levels of microbial contaminants present on seeds can quickly reach levels high enough to cause illness.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cultures (Agriculture)
  • Collaboration avec la FAO
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
CONT

Diverse aerobic bacteria oxidize the three most abundant reduced trace gases in the atmosphere, namely hydrogen(H2), carbon monoxide(CO) and methane(CH4). This review describes the taxonomic distribution, physiological role and biochemical basis of microbial oxidation of these atmospheric trace gases, as well as the ecological, environmental, medical and astrobiological importance of this process.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie
CONT

Methane oxidation is a microbial metabolic process for energy generation and carbon assimilation from methane that is carried out by specific groups of bacteria, the methanotrophs. Methane(CH4) is oxidized with molecular oxygen(O2) to carbon dioxide(CO2).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Immunology
DEF

The sum total of functionally diverse B and T cells in ones circulation at any given moment.

CONT

To allow recognition of many antigens, the immune system creates a large population of receptor molecules that differ in the primary sequence of their antigen-binding regions. This population is called the ‘immunologic repertoire’ and is formed by a process of diversification and selection quite different from the way other gene products are produced in our cells.

CONT

This lymphocyte "homing" process disperses the immunologic repertoire, directs lymphocyte subsets to the specialized microenvironments that control their differentiation and regulate their survival, and targets immune effector cells to sites of antigenic or microbial invasion.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Immunologie
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Peat and Peat Bogs
  • Biogeography
  • Soil Science
DEF

The partial decomposition of vegetable matter under waterlogged and oxygen-deficient conditions.

CONT

Coal forms when plants are deposited in swamps, then submerged rapidly enough to limit oxidation but allow microbial decomposition. In the Pocahontas Formation, these conditions were met in fluvial settings as base level rise resulted in flooding and the formation of backswamps on extensive braided river floodplains. These backswamps were shallow and of a constant depth to allow enough plant mass and its covering of sediment to accumulate as undisturbed peat. This process, known as peatification, continued as decomposing plants were progressively covered with sediments...

  • Science du sol
DEF

Processus de constitution d'une tourbière.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Textiles: Preparation and Processing
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
CONT

Textiles can be endowed with antibacterial activity in a variety of ways. Soil-repellent fluoropolymers have hydrophobic properties which reduce soiling on textiles and, secondarily, microbial growth. Small molecules such as silver, zinc, copper and quarternary ammonium compounds show antibacterial activity. Silver-coated dressings have been used in wound care... Antibacterial gaents may be added to synthetic fibers in the spinning process, but they can also be fixated to supramolecular compounds on the textile surface. Cyclodextrins are ring-like carbohydrates which form complexes with ’guest’ substances. They can be used as transdermal collector systems in toxicology monitoring, but also to diminish bacterial contamination at sweat-prone sites(so-called odor-controlling textiles) or as antibacterial textiles.

DEF

CONT

While carbonation has been used in soda for more than a century, the process has not been applied to milk because the microbial activity of low amounts was unknown and because the carbonation would dissipate in milk cartons. Further, the method for inserting the carbonation was not efficient. Thanks to advanced packaging technologies and more efficient carbonation processes, a new style of fortified milk now is possible.... The amount of carbonation injected into the milk is below the threshold of taste detection... but it is enough to stave off harmful bacteria...
