Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration.

Micromanipulators are devices for positioning and manipulating microminiature objects such as surgical tools, electrical probes, and fiber optics. To see and contact microminiature objects, micromanipulators must be used in conjunction with microvisualization equipment (high-magnification microscopes). In the field of microelectronics, very-high-resolution optical microscopy is combined with mechanical micromanipulators to provide systems capable of visualizing and positioning electrical probes on elements of 1 micron dimension. Optical components with resolution approaching the limits of visible light (1000X) are used with manipulators of the leadscrew, ball-joint design, and 100-thread-per-inch resolution to provide X-, Y-, and Z-axis positioning sensitivity of about 0.7 microns per degree. Micromanipulator systems may be used to perform a broad range of functions including electrical microprobing of integrated circuits (ICs).

Hughes Aircraft is under contract to the US Air Force to demonstrate for use in manufacturing a new process that coats microelectronic devices with a silicon nitride insulating film, offering several key advantages over previous insulating techniques. Microcircuits are prepared for a reactor chamber designed for the photo-chemical vapour deposition(Photo-CVD) process. Developed by Hughes with company funds, Photo-CVD offers the potential of eliminating wire bond corrosion, device degradation due to leaky standard metal or ceramic hermetic packages, and failure due to loose conductive particles. According to the company, it is not destructive because it does not generate the ionized particles and broadband electromatic radiation encountered in Plasma-CVD and physical sputtering processes.

CONT
