Crazy Ivan is a U. S. Navy term for a Soviet submarine manoeuvre, characterized by any number of sudden and sharp turns, used by submarine crews to "look behind" them. Because of the acoustic distortions and noise caused by propeller blades, it is nearly possible for conventional sonars to detect objects directly behind a submarine. Thus, with sudden turns, the area where the sonar is not effective shifts relative to the current heading of the submarine, causing previous gaps in sonar coverage to be revealed while masking known areas. 1, record 4, English, - crazy%20Ivan
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The "crazy" part of the name comes from the fact that these manoeuvre were very sudden and "Ivan" was a common nickname used to refer to the Russians. A standard tactic of pursuing submarines would be to closely follow the Soviet submarine hidden right in the sonar gap, causing the U.S. submarine to go undetected. 1, record 4, English, - crazy%20Ivan

The ampere-turn(At) is the MKS(metres, kilograms, seconds) unit of magnetomotive force(MMF), represented by a direct current of one ampere flowing in a single-turn loop in a vacuum. "Turns" refers to the winding number of an electrical conductor comprising an inductor. Proteins are organized as a hierarchy of structures. The sequence is organized by variation of the main-chain torsion angles and the formation of hydrogen bonds into secondary structures such as [alpha]-helices [alpha], [beta]-strands [beta] and turns. «Combat persistence» as used here means the number of steady-state turns that can be accomplished at the flight condition of altitude and Mach number. These data assume the aircraft to be full of fuel at the initiation of combat. Again, one sees that the larger number of turns is achieved at speeds near the cruise speed; the airframe is efficient near cruise speed. The engines were specifically designed and chosen to match this point of airframe efficiency. Further the speed at which sufficient combat persistence is obtained for a "sensible" fight(allowing at least three turns) lie below Mach 1. 1, record 38, English, - combat%20persistence

The transmitter loop is a large rectangle, several thousand feet to the side. A long wire might also be used. The detector consists of two mutually perpendicular loops, one horizontal and one vertical, connected effectively in opposition through a transformer to amplifier and headphones. The vertical coil, with a fixed number of turns, is shunted by a capacitance to give parallel resonance at the source frequency and is connected through a reversing switch to the transformer primary. The horizontal coil has multiple taps for a variable inductance. The coils are about two feet in diameter and are mounted on a vertical post. 1, record 40, English, - Bieler%2DWatson%20method

1, record 40, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20Bieler%2DWatson
