The rod, perch, or pole... is a... and unit of length of various historical definitions. In British imperial and US customary units, it is defined as 16 1⁄2 feet, equal to exactly 1⁄320 of a mile, or 5 1⁄2 yards(a quarter of a surveyor's chain), and is exactly 5. 0292 meters. The rod is useful as a unit of length because integer multiples of it can form one acre of square measure(area). The "perfect acre" is a rectangular area of 43, 560 square feet, bounded by sides 660 feet(a furlong) long and 66 feet(a chain) wide(220 yards by 22 yards) or, equivalently, 40 rods by 4 rods. An acre is therefore 160 square rods or 10 square chains. 2, record 1, English, - rod

When conducting studies and experiments, researchers pay attention to constants and variables to draw conclusions. Constants are the factors that do not change throughout the experiment, and variables are the factors that vary or have the potential to vary. While there are many different kinds of variables, the two most commonly discussed are the dependent and independent variables. … The dependent variable is the factor that receives the stimulus. Researchers measure dependent variables to explore the potential effects of the stimulus, because the aptly named dependent variable is dependent upon the stimulus to be changed. For example, in a study on the relationship between the length of a bicycle ride and the riders’ heart rate, the dependent variable is the heart rate, which the length of the bicycle ride may affect. … The independent variable is the factor altered or varied to give various amounts of the stimulus. 3, record 15, English, - dependent%20variable

2, record 15, French, - variable%20d%C3%A9pendante

One hertz equals one cycle per second. Another measure of frequency is the period of a wave. It is the length of time it takes for the wave to complete one cycle. Period is obtained by dividing one second by the number of cycles per second(frequency). For example : if the frequency is 1Mhz(one million cycles per second), the period will be one-millionth of a second(1 microsecond). 2, record 20, English, - period

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake :... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. Relate your findings to the oscillating behaviour of the International Space Station as it grows in mass and length. 1, record 31, English, - shake

Affiche «Rock'n'roll spatial». Vibrations : [...]

2, record 46, French, - d%C3%A9tection%20d%27un%20%C3%A9cart%20angulaire

In its simplest form, the ring laser gyro (RLG) consists of a triangular block of glass drilled out for 3 helium-neon laser bores with mirrors at the 120 degree points - the corners. Counter-rotating laser beams - one clockwise (CW) and the other counter-clockwise (CCW) coexist in this resonator. At some point, a photosensor monitors the beams where they intersect. 5, record 47, English, - counter%2Drotating%20laser%20beam

When the RLG [ring laser gyro] is rotating, the path length around the loop is actually different depending if you measure it clockwise or counter-clockwise. This path length difference causes the counter-rotating laser beams to have a different frequency. 4, record 47, French, - faisceau%20de%20lumi%C3%A8re%20contra%2Drotatif

The Cantor function describes the distribution of mass along the Cantor bar. Many writers refer to its graph as the Devil' s staircase, because it is odd indeed... Its derivative vanishes almost everywhere, and its continuous variation manages to occur over a set whose length-i. e.-linear measure-vanishes. 4, record 50, English, - Devil%26rsquo%3Bs%20staircase

Roughness length z0 is a measure of the roughness of the surface. It is not normally measured directly, but is defined as the height at which the wind speed becomes zero. It is generally not the same as surface height. For example z0 for a forest is always greater than z0 for short grass.... From the point of view of surface layer ground based measurements, z0 is useful in estimating the effect of the ground on the flow. 4, record 74, French, - longueur%20de%20rugosit%C3%A9

Let us begin with a close examination of the concept of global density of matter. As with the concept of the length of a coastline, things seem simple, but in fact go awry very quickly and most interestingly. To define and measure density, one starts with the mass M(R) in a sphere of radius R centered on Earth. The approximated density... is evaluated. After that, the value of R is made to tend toward infinity, and the global density is defined as the limit toward which the approximate density converges. 1, record 75, English, - global%20density

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses. 1, record 81, English, - optoacoustic%20detector

We have seen that the distance between "pro A" and "ade" on the E. coli chromosome is equivalent to about 45 percent recombination, so that these markers appear as only weakly linked in recombination analysis.
