The two series of pot experiments were carried out at the Department of Plant Production Ecology in Uppsala, Sweden(63o81′N, 20o24′E) during 2007. The effects of the pre-planting treatments were tested in two outdoor pot trials arranged in rows 2 m [meters] apart and with 40 cm [centimeters] spacing between plants. Mitscherlich pots were filled with 4 L of planting soil and one seed tuber(40–50 mm [milimeters]) was planted per pot. After planting, an additional 1. 5 L [liter] soil were added, giving a planting depth of 5 cm. The experiments were laid out in a completely randomized design, with 10 replicates and three potato cultivars in each experiment. The cultivars used were Matilda, Cicero and Ditta in Experiment 1, and Matilda, Ditta and Ovatio in Experiment 2. The pots were kept outdoors from 11 June to 23 July(Experiment 1) and 16 June to 31 July(Experiment 2). The main differences between the experiments were the length of the pre-sprouting periodand cultivars. 1, record 1, English, - pre%2Dsprouting%20period

In order to model the progress of an epidemic in a large population, the population diversity must be reduced to a few key characteristics which are relevant to the infection under consideration. For example, for most common childhood diseases that confer long-lasting immunity, it makes sense to divide the population into those who are susceptible to the disease, those who are infected and those who have recovered and are immune. These subdivisions of the population are called compartments ... The SIR model labels these three compartments S = number susceptible, I =number infectious, and R =number recovered (immune). This is a good and simple model for many infectious diseases including measles, mumps and rubella. 4, record 14, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

[The Kermack-McKendrick model] was proposed to explain the rapid rise and fall in the number of infected patients observed in epidemics such as the plague(London 1665-1666, Bombay 1906) and cholera(London 1865). It assumes that the population size is fixed(i. e., no births, deaths due to disease, or deaths by natural causes), incubation period of the infectious agent is instantaneous, and duration of infectivity is same as length of the disease. It also assumes a completely homogeneous population with no age, spatial, or social structure. 3, record 14, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

Another measure of frequency is the period of a wave. It is the length of time it takes for the wave to complete one cycle. Period is obtained by dividing one second by the number of cycles per second(frequency). The three common SAR acquisition modes ...: Stripmap SAR, Spotlight SAR, and ScanSAR. ... A Spotlight SAR steers the antenna beam to continuously illuminate a certain region on ground much longer than in the Stripmap case [Carrara et al., 1995]. As a result, the azimuth bandwidth becomes larger, which hence may be exploited to increase the azimuth resolution. ... It offers the possibility to measure different components of the surface current using only a single pass (in case of a spotlight single-pass interferometry configuration). To this purpose the total azimuth bandwidth is divided into different (e.g. two) non-overlapping parts which are processed separately with their individual optimum Doppler centroid values so that the resulting images represent observations from two different aspect angles. A spotlight system operated in that way provides data similar to a Dual-Beam ATI [Allied Telesyn International] configuration. 4, record 40, English, - spotlight%2Dmode

Photoperiodism is the use of the change in day and night length to time certain physiological and behavioural functions. I am interested in how temperate birds use the change in day length to time reproduction. Most birds do not have their gonads all year round. They regenerate their sexual organs to coincide with the breeding season. Day and night length is not the only environmental cue that they can use to help them time reproduction correctly. For example some birds use temperature and rainfall. 4, record 46, English, - photoperiodism

Metering pumps move precise volumes of liquid in a specified time period to provide accurate flow rates. This class of pumps moves liquids in two stages : the suction stroke and the discharge stroke. During the suction stroke, liquid is pulled into the pump cavity past the inlet check valve. During the discharge stroke, the inlet valve closes; the outlet valve opens, and the liquid is pushed out. 1, record 59, French, - abonner

The duration of the period between two successive crossings of the celestial equator at the vernal equinox is known as the "tropical year". Its length is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 46 seconds, or 365. 4242 days(...) 1, record 74, English, - tropical%20year

Vortices generally dissipate or break up in one of three ways : first, over a long period of time, turbulent diffusion can enlarge each wake so that the wakes merge and dissipate; second, disturbances along the length of the vortices become unstable and sinuous oscillations develop which cause the vortices to touch and link together; and third, a sudden structural change known as vortex breakdown or bursting can abruptly widen the vortex care. 1, record 75, English, - vortex%20breakdown

1, record 75, French, - dislocation%20des%20tourbillons
