Le premier principe est qu'un voilier a priorité sur un navire à moteur. Si deux voiliers naviguent sous des amures différentes, celui qui navigue tribord amures est prioritaire (Le vent vient de droite). Si deux voiliers naviguent sous la même amure, c'est celui qui a la voile la plus bordée qui a la priorité, celui donc qui remonte le plus au vent.
