La région F quant à elle est divisée en 3 parties : entre 140 et 200 km (région F1), il y a transition entre les ions moléculaires et les ions atomiques. La région F2, au-dessus de 250 km, est celle du second maximum de concentration d'électrons. Il n'y a qu'un ion abondant, l'oxygène atomique ionisé une fois (c'est-à-dire ayant perdu un électron). Au-dessus de la région F2 se trouve la région F supérieure, avec une transition entre l'oxygène ionisé et les ions plus légers d'hydrogène ou d'hélium.
