The best known, largest, and oldest securities market in the U.S., founded in 1792. Generally, the shares traded on the NYSE are those of larger companies. Prices of stocks traded are determined by public demand and supply. NYSE does not own, buy, sell, or establish the prices of stocks. About 23 locations (posts) on the floor of the Exchange are assigned for trading in and for giving quotes on a specific security. ... At each post 100 or more securities are traded. The NYSE has over 1,300 individual members who are governed by a Board of Governors.

The index is measured hourly and at the end of the trading day. The NYSE index is a composite measurement. It is divided into four categories: industrials, transportation, utilities, and finance companies. The index gives a value measurement because it takes into account the numbr of outstanding shares for the individual stocks. Average price change measurements also are provided to the news services.
