A market measurement of the value change of an average share of common stock listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

OBS

The index is measured hourly and at the end of the trading day. The NYSE index is a composite measurement. It is divided into four categories: industrials, transportation, utilities, and finance companies. The index gives a value measurement because it takes into account the numbr of outstanding shares for the individual stocks. Average price change measurements also are provided to the news services.
