... held in Vienna, Austria in November 1991 by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The objective of the Conference was to "bring together the understanding and judgment of the world scientific community on the issues of highest priority for the future of the environment and development," and the Conference outcome "was to provide both a consolidated contribution to the Rio Conference and a perspective for the future of international science in these and related areas." This agenda discusses problems of the environment and development (such as population and natural resource use; agriculture, land use and degradation; industry and waste; energy; health) as well as scientific understanding of the earth system (for instance, global cycles; atmosphere and climate; marine and coastal systems; terrestrial systems; freshwater resources; biodiversity).

En 1994, se creó, bajo los auspicios de la OMM [Organización Meteorológica Mundial], un comité de coordinación de los servicios meteorológicos nacionales de los países de la región del Mar Caspio(CASPCOM), con objeto de llevar a cabo un importante trabajo de organización en la región. Así, se esbozó un Programa integrado de Hidrometeorología y Vigilancia del Medio Ambiente en la Región del mar Caspio(CASPAS), se concibió un proyecto de acuerdo de cooperación regional de los países del Mar Caspio en el marco del CASPAS, se organizaron siete reuniones del CASPCOM y se desarrolló y mejoró el sistema internacional unificado de acopio e intercambio de informaciones y datos hidrometeorológicos y oceanográficos sobre la situación y la contaminación del Mar Caspio con miras a solucionar problemas de ciencia aplicada y de índole socioeconómica y ecológica en esa región.

STEP is currently the major activity of the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics, which was established by the International Council of Scientific Unions in 1987. The goal of STEP is to advance the quantitative understanding of the coupling mechanisms responsible for the transfer of energy and mass from one region of the solar-terrestrial system to another. The program seeks to improve the predictability of the effects of the variable components of solar energy and disturbance on the terrestrial environment, on technological systems in space and on earth and on the biosphere. STEP involves coordinated ground-based, aircraft, balloon, rocket and satellite measurements. It is organized in six projects.
