The Sahara Desert is by far Earth's largest source of airborne dust, and the storms can arise at any time of year. In winter and spring storms, Saharan dust often ends up fertilizing the nutrient-poor soils of the Amazon rainforest. Dust storms in the summer tend to loft material higher into the atmosphere, allowing plumes to travel thousands of kilometres on high-level winds. Those summer seasonal wind patterns can carry the dust from Africa to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. 2, record 4, English, - Saharan%20dust

The UN [United Nations] has been trying since August 1988 to arrange a ceasefire between Morocco and the POLISARIO guerrillas and end their dispute over the Western Sahara. Once the fighting stopped, the UN would then help prepare the territory for a referendum to determine whether the people wished to be independent or citizens of Morocco. The necessary conditions have not yet been agreed to, however, and although the mission is still in operation, Canada's participation ended in 1994. 3, record 14, English, - United%20Nations%20Mission%20for%20the%20Referendum%20in%20Western%20Sahara

The impact of a natural occurrence such as drought, thus, is likely to depend more on the way in which a society is organized than on the natural event itself. This is perhaps most obviously illustrated by the fact that many societies continue to survive and thrive in areas of endemic drought or where there is little or no rainfall. 1, record 22, English, - endemic%20drought

Record number: 32, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The air comes from the Sahara (as a desert wind) and is dry and dusty, but the term is not used in North Africa, where it is called chom (hot) or arifi (thirsty). In crossing the Mediterranean the sirocco picks up much moisture because of its high temperature, and reaches Malta, Sicily, and southern Italy as a very enervating, hot, humid wind. As it travels northward, it causes fog and rain. In some parts of the Mediterranean region the word may be used for any warm southerly wind, often of foehn type. In the extreme southwest of Greece a warm foehn crossing the coastal mountains is named sirocco di levante. There are a number of local variants of the spelling such as xaroco (Portuguese), jaloque or xaloque (Spanish), xaloc or xaloch (Catalonian). In the Rhône delta the warm rainy southeast sirocco is called eissero. On Zakynthos Island it is called lampaditsa. 3, record 32, English, - sirocco

2, record 32, French, - sirocco

The construction of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline is one of the most promising projects carried out as part of the Maghreb-Europe partnership. This project is considered as a physical link between the Maghreb and Europe pending the fixed link between Tangiers and the Rock of Gibraltar. The Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline which was dedicated on November 8, 1996 will link the Hass R'mel field in Algeria with Cordoba, in Andalusia through Morocco. It will service in a first stage the Spanish, Portuguese and Moroccan markets, then the French and German ones with an expected increase by 2000. It will supply 1,500 million cubic meters of gas to Morocco. 3, record 41, English, - Maghreb%2DEurope%20gas%20pipeline

In 1996 the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, a huge transnational energy infrastructure, entered into operation, configuring a new route for natural gas from the Algerian gas fields to the European markets. The pipeline, of around 1,400 km in length and 48 inches in diameter, connects the Hassi R'Mel deposits to the Spanish gas pipeline network in Cordoba. The gas pipeline is 48 inches in diameter in its 530 km course through Algeria, 540 km through Morocco and the 45 km stretch through the Straits of Gibraltar in which there are two lines of 22 inches in diameter each. 4, record 41, English, - Maghreb%2DEurope%20gas%20pipeline

In the Sahara a rock stratum called the Continental Intercalary, which dates to the Cretaceous Period and which includes Nubian Sandstones, is the most important water-bearing layer. It extends over very large areas and reaches a thickness of more than 3,000 feet; in Egypt and Algeria it provides artesian water. In The Sudan it sometimes lies directly on the Precambrian rock and contains underground water layers of local importance. Overlaying the Continental Intercalary but generally separated from it by a thick marine deposit is a layer called the Continental Terminal, which is the second-largest aquifer in this area. Both these layers contain "fossil" water _ that is to say, water that entered the layers when rainfall in and around the Sahara was much more abundant than today. Near the surface, aquifers are found in such recent deposits as alluvial deposits and sand dunes. 1, record 59, English, - Continental%20Terminal

1, record 59, French, - Continental%20terminal

The pholidosaurid record for size is held by a huge specimen from Africa. P. Taquet of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris has turned up complete skulls and partial skeletons of the species Sarcosuchus imperator in a remarkable Lower Cretaceous fossil locality in the Saharan part of the Republic of Niger. This gavial-like monster was 11 meters long overall, and its narrow skull measures 1.8 meters. It apparently lived in the rivers of this now-arid region. 1, record 60, English, - Sarcosuchus%20imperator

2, record 60, French, - Sarcosuchus%20imperator
