Polyfluoroalkyl substances are distinguished from perfluoroalkyl substances by not being fully fluorinated. Instead, they have a non-fluorine atom (typically hydrogen or oxygen) attached to at least one, but not all, carbon atoms, while at least two or more of the remaining carbon atoms in the carbon chain tail are fully fluorinated.

Les hydrocarbures halogénés comprennent les halométhanes, qui n’ ont qu'un seul atome de carbone, et les haloéthanes, qui ont deux atomes de carbone. Contrairement aux composés chlorofluorocarbonés, qui ne contiennent que deux halogènes, le chlore et le fluor, les hydrocarbures halogénés peuvent contenir tous les autres halogènes : brome, iode et astate; cependant ces derniers éléments sont rarement utilisés et c'est pour cette raison qu'on emploie parfois le terme chlorofluorocarbone au sens d’hydrocarbure halogéné.

L’ordre de préséance des termes français devrait être : «hydrocarbure halogéné», «halocarbone» et «halocarbure». Le terme «hydrocarbure halogéné» remplace fort bien le terme «halocarbure» pour traduire le mot anglais «halocarbon». Le terme «halocarbone» qui est meilleur que le terme «halocarbure» est cependant d’usage peu fréquent. Le terme «halocarbure» quoique de forme discutable peut être employé dans un contexte de continuité, particulièrement si le nom était généralement accepté et utilisé antérieurement (par ex. dans un règlement fédéral).

In its intravenous formulation it is used to treat a number of tumours including breast cancer and cancer of the colon. It also comes as a cream which can be used to treat cervical, anal or genital neoplasms caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). ... 5-fluorouracil is also known as fluorouracil, or the abbreviation 5-FU. It is available in a generic formulation and is also manufactured by Roche under the tradename Efudix.
