The amount of substance of a system which contain as many elementary entities as there are atoms in 0.012 kilogram of carbon-12 (i.e., 6.023 X 1023).

For example, NaCl has a formula weight of 58.5 (Na, 23, and chlorine, 35.5). One mole of NaCl is 58.5 g.

OBS

Formerly, the connotation of "mole" was "gram molecular weight". Current usage tends to apply the term "mole" to an amount containing Avogadro's number of whatever units are being considered. Thus, it is possible to have a mole of atoms, ions, radicals, electrons, or quanta. This usage makes unnecessary such terms as "gram-atom", "gram-formula weight", etc.

When the mole is used, the elementary entities must be specified and may be atoms, molecules, ions, electrons, other particles or specified groups of such particles.
