A heavy oily poisonous liquid compound ... that is insoluble in water but soluble in gasoline and other organic solvents, that is made usually by the action of ethyl chloride on a sodium-lead alloy, and that is used as an antiknock agent.

Le plomb tétraéthyle [...] corps très toxique, utilisé universellement comme antidétonant dans les moteurs à explosion, est un produit industriel de gros tonnage; on indique qu'aux États-Unis, cet usage correspond à plus de 10% de la consommation totale du plomb. On connaît plus d'un millier de dérivés organométalliques du plomb. On peut partir d'un composé organomagnésien et le traiter par le tétrachlorure ou le bichlorure de plomb.
