Agar media provide support for the growth and multiplication of cells and are very widely used for the preparation of Petri dishes and test tubes for isolation and identification of microorganisms. They are also used for the growth or culture of plant and animal tissues. Nutrients must be added to agar to promote growth, since agar is generally not considered to be a nutrient, but a substrate). Agar media can also be used for germination.
