El ámbar es una resina de la misma naturaleza que el copal. [...] Para los antiguos era una materia tan preciosa como el marfil. Su nombre griego era elektron, del cual deriva electricidad, pues los primeros efectos eléctricos se apreciaron al frotar el ámbar con un tejido de lana para atraer con él los cuerpos ligeros. Al solidificarse, el ámbar encerraba insectos, semillas, plumas y otros objetos que, conservados perfectamente en su masa al abrigo de agentes exteriores, son fósiles sumamente útiles en paleontología.

El ámbar se presenta en forma de masas irregulares de fractura concoidea [...] Se llama también succino y contiene una sustancia volátil: el ácido succínico. Se compone de 78 % de carbono, 11 % de oxígeno, 10 % de hidrógeno y una pequeña proporción de azufre.
