L'enveloppe [virale] est composée de la double couche lipidique de la membrane de l'hôte ainsi que de protéines d'origine virale. Les protéines situées du côté externe de la membrane sont toujours des protéines glycosylées et forment des spicules appelés aussi des peplomères. Ces dernières sont responsables d'activités biologiques comme l'hémagglutinine, la neuraminidase, protéines de fusion des enveloppes lipidiques.
