Érosion hydrique : L'entraînement de la terre par les eaux de ruissellement dépend de l'importance et du rythme des précipitations, de la structure du sol, de sa pente et de sa couverture végétale. Seules les précipitations intenses sont responsables de l'érosion, d'abord parce que la grosseur et la vitesse des gouttes d'eau provoquent un rebondissement de la terre lors de l'impact sur le sol, ensuite parce que le sol est saturé, car la vitesse d'infiltration de l'eau est insuffisante.
