De l'anglais «segregated» signifiant «isolé»; donne l'adjectif «ségrégé, e». Du verbe anglais «segregate» signifiant «isoler»; donne le verbe «ségréguer» écrit parfois «ségréger», surtout en parlant de matériaux ou de métaux : «se ségréger» signifie «se séparer en divers constituants». Un alliage ségrégé est chimiquement non homogène ou comprend des impuretés rassemblées en raison de la solidification de l'alliage mais encore distinctes parce que non amalgamées.
