Canada is working through many international organizations and instruments to strengthen measures to protect the marine environment, including global fish stocks. In particular, the 1995 United Nations Agreement on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (commonly called the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, or UNFA) provides the framework for the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks in high seas areas regulated by RFMOs. It carries an obligation to apply the precautionary approach and ecosystem-based management, as well as to minimize pollution, waste and discards of fish.

Le Canada déploie des efforts dans le cadre d'un grand nombre d'organisations et de mécanismes internationaux afin de renforcer les mesures de protection du milieu marin, y compris les stocks de poissons de la planète. En particulier, l'Accord des Nations Unies sur les stocks de poissons chevauchants et grands migrateurs de 1995 (qu'on appelle Accord des Nations Unies sur les stocks de poissons, ou ANUP) établit le cadre de conservation et de gestion des stocks de poissons chevauchants et grands migrateurs en haute mer réglementés par des ORGP. Il comporte l'obligation d'appliquer l'approche de précaution et la gestion écosystémique et de réduire la pollution, les déchets et les rejets de poissons.
