ULNAR NERVE COMPRESSION [5 records]

Record 1 2002-07-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nervous System
CONT

Compression neuropathy :-damage to a peripheral nerve by pressure-can occur anywhere along its course, although certain sites more vulnerable-source of pressure may be external : such as ulnar neuropathy from leaning on the elbow, or a peroneal palsy from pressure from a cast or brace-compression may be from source inside body :nerve may be angulated by adjacent tissues within the body such as a bony callus, synovial thickening, ganglia, tumors, fibrous bands, or normal or aberrant muscle.-compression may be acute, continuous or intermittent-recovery from compression neuropathy can be partial or complete depending on the degree of injury, type of injury and systemic factors.-treatment should be focussed on relieving the compression on the nerve.

CONT

CONT

Entrapment and compressive neuropathies. The peripheral nerves are vulnerable to chronic compression or entrapment in a variety of sites. The most frequently encountered are median nerve compression at the wrist within the carpal tunnel(carpal tunnel syndrome) ;median nerve compression in the upper forearm; ulnar nerve compression in the hand(cubital tunnel syndrome), wrist, or at the elbow(tardy ulnar nerve palsy) ;tibial nerve compression behind the medial malleolus(tarsal tunnel syndrome) ;and peroneal nerve compression over the lateral fibular head.

Compression of the ulnar nerve at the wrist can be caused by a multitude of intrinsic and extrinsic factors... Magnetic resonance imaging can be a useful method in diagnosing the cause and location of ulnar nerve compression.

CONT
