The alteration in the chemical structure of a substance, brought about by biological action, resulting in the loss of a specific property of that substance. 2, record 1, English, - primary%20biodegradation
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Primary degradation occurs when the molecule has been oxidized, or otherwise altered by bacterial action to such an extent that its characteristic properties are no longer evident or when it no longer responds to analytical procedures more or less specific for detecting the original surfactant. 3, record 1, English, - primary%20biodegradation
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
In relation to surfactant biodegradability, it is important to distinguish between primary and ultimate biodegradation. For example, the loss of the ester sulphate groups from surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulphate or sodium dodecyltriethoxy sulphate would be a primary biodegradation step that would lead to an immediate loss of susfactant properties.... For the most part, industry and water and sewage authorities have been content to ensure that new surfactant products do undergo reasonably rapid primary and ultimate biodegradation and a variety of laboratory tests have been developed specifically since the advent of synthetic surfactants. 4, record 1, English, - primary%20biodegradation

1, record 1, French, - biod%C3%A9gradation%20primaire

In the past, the key aim of EU detergents policy was to safeguard the single market in these products and to ensure a high level of environmental protection. It focused on preventing foam in water systems caused by surfactants, a key substance used in detergents. In its working document, the Enterprise Directorate-General suggests the recasting of the five existing Directives concerning the biodegradability of surfactants. New provisions are included to better protect the aquatic environment by controlling the ultimate biodegradability of detergents;... 3, record 3, English, - ultimate%20biodegradability

3, record 3, French, - biod%C3%A9gradabilit%C3%A9%20finale
