El nacimiento de un hijo con graves anomalías físicas o mentales es una de las experiencias más dolorosas que puede vivir una pareja. Entre los años 60 y 80 se desarrollaron las técnicas de diagnóstico prenatal, que hoy día son habituales. Estas técnicas permiten determinar si el feto es normal o anormal durante el segundo o tercer trimestre de gestación, e implican la interrupción del embarazo cuando el diagnóstico es desfavorable.
