Les matériaux «acoustiques» (en anglais : «acoustic(al) materials») se divisent en trois types : les matériaux absorbants (en anglais : «sound-absorbing materials»), les matériaux isolants (en anglais : «insulation materials») et les matériaux destinés à l'isolation contre la transmission des vibrations (en anglais : «soundproofing»). L'insonorisation se fait à l'aide de matériaux acoustiques du type absorbants. C'est la raison pour laquelle nous avons proposé en anglais les génériques «acoustic(al) wool» et le spécifique «sound-absorbing wool», parce que c'est ce dernier type de matériau qui est utilisé.
