Le profilographe aéroporté (PA) est un altimètre RADAR enregistreur à faisceau étroit qui détermine les profils topographiques pour la cartographie des régions éloignées. L'instrument comporte un émetteur d'impulsions de 3,2 cm qui alimente un radiateur parabolique installé sous l'aéronef. Cette antenne dirige la radiation à la verticale, vers le bas, et la hauteur de l'aéronef est mesurée par le chronométrage électronique de l'impulsion réfléchie. Les données altimétriques apparaissent sous la forme d'un graphique continu.
