Les étages d'accélération à poudre d'ARIANE 5 sont constitués principalement de moteurs à propergol solide. Leur diamètre est de 3,03 m pour une hauteur de 30 m et une masse au décollage d'environ 270 tonnes. Ils possèdent chacun un ensemble avant constitué d'un cône incliné transmettant la poussée au corps central par l'intermédiaire d'un dispositif d'accrochage avant, muni de systèmes de séparation, une jupe arrière reliant le lanceur à la table de lancement.
