Depuis, on a montré qu'une molécule d'anticorps donnée peut être reconnue comme antigène étranger par l'organisme qui l'a produite et des anticorps dirigés contre ce premier anticorps peuvent apparaître dans ce même organisme. Les anticorps dirigés contre les déterminants antigéniques portés par le premier anticorps sont appelés anticorps anti-idiotypiques. Le phénomène d'idiotypie révèle donc l'existence de composants du soi du sujet qui sont cependant antigéniques dans le sujet lui-même. Les anticorps anti-idiotypiques reconnaissent donc aussi les déterminants antigéniques (ou idiotopes) portés par les récepteurs des lymphocytes B et, selon toute vraisemblance, par les lymphocytes T.
