When the new St. Lawrence Seaway was being opened up, the level of the 18 approach spans of the Jacques Cartier bridge to the south of St. Helen Island had to be raised bodily, the central 75-m. span by as much as 5 m., to give the 45-m. vertical clearance required for the Seaway.
